Good Afternoon everyone! I took a couple of days to enjoy the beautiful weather that has finally returned. Now after a short break I am ready to dive into the next distribution. Without further ado, here is Kubuntu 14.04. This is a continuing series and due to the certain similarities I have omitted some install steps. If you need to reference these you can look at a few of my previous posts.
As usual during the install of this distribution you will have to confirm location, language preferences and your user information.
Like Ubuntu it installs quickly and easily. Just get through that first preferences part then go make a sandwich and grab a drink.
Once the install is complete you will be asked to restart. Once restarted go ahead and log in.
Up in the right corner you can click on Desktop and see all the functions to personalize your desktop. Add Panels, widgets, change settings, lock your screen and shut down your computer.
Clicking on the Kubuntu icon at the bottom left hand side a nice menu pops up, you can see here your favorites, any applications that are installed, have access to settings, recent programs and documents as well as your normal restart or shut down functions.
If you have a smartphone you know widgets as those little programs that run continuously. Widgets on your phone can do anything from telling you the current weather to counting the steps you take in a day. There are several widgets you can use on Kubuntu as well. Right clicking on the panel and going to panel options and clicking on Add Widgets will open up a widgets manager.
Pick your category and go through the widgets that are available.
To personalize your desktop go to your computer and click on system settings. You'll be able to choose all your desktop backgrounds or settings from there.
Kubuntu offers a software center for all your program needs.
It is split up into categories and offers ratings and reviews for each program.
After reviewing and deciding on a program it is a simple click of the install button.
After my dislike of Ubuntu with Unity I was ready to forego any other official Ubuntu derivative. I decided to try out at least one more during this series, and I am glad I did. Next up: Kubuntu Review.
